An Important Message Regarding Mailings from the

Voter Participation Center and The Center for Voter Information

Indian River County, FL – The Indian River County Supervisor of Elections would like to warn voters that the Voter Participation Center and The Center for Voter Information have sent letters to 11,000 individuals in Indian River County regarding their voter registration status. The Elections Office has received numerous telephone calls from frustrated and confused voters.

One version of the letters is addressed to “Current Resident” and states, “According to our review of publicly available records, no one at this address is currently registered to vote.” These mailings are alarming to already-registered voters and family members who feel their voter registration has in some way been compromised, resulting in erosion of voter confidence in the process.

The Supervisor of Elections Office received one of these letters addressed to “Current Resident.” It is evident that the Voter Participation Center and the Center for Voter Information do not vet their mailing lists. It should be obvious that businesses are not allowed to register to vote.

The most disheartening calls to the Indian River County Supervisor of Elections office are from family members whose deceased spouse or child have received these letters. Sending letters from poorly managed lists to people whose family members are deceased, to minors, and to pets is unacceptable and cruel. Recipients of these letters assume they are sent from the Supervisor of Elections office, resulting in inordinate amounts of time by staff to reassure voters that the letters do not come from the Elections Office.

To confirm your voter registration status visit the Supervisor of Elections website at VoteIndianRiver.com or call the elections office directly at 772-226-3440. If you have received such a notice, you can call the organization directly at 202-420-3034 or 877-255-6750 to lodge your complaint and be removed from their mailing list
